Pentacostal Assemblies of the World’s Musical tradition stretches to R&B…

When you hear John Legend sing, there is a certain something in his voice that is undeniably “church”. I always felt like John Legend fell off someone’s organ.

When you see MC Hammer dance, there is something inherently “church” about it.  Everyone has seen that brother that dances like Hammer when he dances in church.  Makes you wonder why we call it the Hammer.. hmmm..

When you listen to clean lyrical content of BabyFace Edmunds, there is something in the lyric that says, this man understands love and it’s clean enough to listen to.  Well all of the artists mentioned above are seeds of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World or the PAW.

According to the Christian Post, the denomination’s spokesperson, Timothy Moore said “few people know about the Pentecostal roots of some of their favorite musical artists”.

Here are the home churches or churches those R&B gentlemen attended:

  • John “Legend” Stephens – El Bethel Temple in Springfield, Ohio
  • Stanley Burrell – a.k.a M.C. Hammer – attended Christ Temple Community Church in Menlo Park, Calif.
  • Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds attended Grace Apostolic Church in Indianapolis.
The article went on to mention some of the gospel artists that have that background in PAW:
Marvin Sapp
Fred Hammond
Dietrick Haddon
Jonathan Nelson
Anthony “Tonex” Williams
Byron Cage
The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World held their International Summer Convention in New Orleans this year.
