Pastor Donnie McClurkin and Perfecting Faith Church, in collaboration with Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick, will host a Gun Buyback Program on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The community initiative, co-sponsored by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office and Nassau County Police Department, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the church’s parking lot, 311 N. Main St., in Freeport.

Anyone wanting to dispose of an unregistered, working handgun can bring it to the church parking lot and exchange it for $200 in cash – no questions asked. Participants are requested to transport the guns, unloaded, in either a plastic bag, shoe box or, if coming by car, in the vehicle’s trunk. No licensed handguns, BB guns, air pistols, long guns or replicas will be accepted.

Getting illegal guns off the street is a critical public safety issue that should be of concern to everyone, including the church, observed McClurkin. “Just being the church on the corner is not good enough anymore,” he explained. “The church must bring great change and great transformation to the community and people in the community. That’s why we are partnering with the Village of Freeport, the Nassau County Police Department and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office to bring this program to the community.”
